I had very constructive meetings with leaders of the Chinese community on 7 and 8 April 2001.

I share their concerns that in recent reports, some sections of the media have given the impression that investigations into the source of the current foot and mouth outbreak have proven that it came from waste from a Chinese restaurant.

This is untrue. Investigations into the source of the outbreak continue and the initial source of the infection has not yet been identified.

The delegates made a representation to me concerning the damaging effect on the Chinese community by this irresponsible reporting. I have been particularly concerned at the tone of some reporting, which seems close to carrying racist overtones. I deplore the scapegoating of the Chinese community. There is absolutely no justification for this. I, and the Government, stand shoulder to shoulder with the Chinese community against racism.

I understand that Chinese catering is the economic foundation of the Chinese community in Britain and an integral part of the British tourist industry.

I assured the delegation that I had never personally made a link between the outbreak and Chinese restaurants and as far as I was aware, neither had any MAFF representative. I have asked my officials to investigate claims that the source of this story came from within this Ministry.

It is down to all of us - politicians, media, farmers- to act responsibly. This outbreak has caused great suffering and anguish, and what we need to do is work together to defeat the disease.
