2008 Inner Mongolian Culture Week in London
The Mongolian Youth Chorus from China brings their award-winning show to London’s Cadogan Hall. This group specialises in multi-vocal signing with no accompaniment of instruments. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience their skilful display of three unique features of Mongolian music - Hoomii (Throat-singing), Urtiin Duu (Long song), and Morin Khuur (Horse-head fiddle). The latter two have been nominated by UNESCO as Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Hoomii is a remarkable singing technique that really tests the limits of vocal ingenuity. Singers produce two distinct tones simultaneously. With the mixture of one low, fundamental pitch with a series of high pitches that imitate natural sounds such as the whistle of a bird and the rhythms of a mountain stream, Hoomii singing always brings alive for the audience the pastoral life of Mongolian nomads. Urtiin Duu earns its name, not because the songs are long, but because each syllable of text is extended for a long duration. For example, a four-minute song may only consist of ten words. An abundance of ornamentation and falsetto, together with an extremely wide vocal range, makes Urtiin Duu the liveliest expression of exultation of the Mongolian people at festivities. Morin Khuur, a two-stringed instrument, like a cello, has been a part of Mongolian culture dating back to at least the 13th century Mongol Empire. This instrument is usually played in ceremonies for solo performance, though also to accompany long songs and dances.
