When Chinese folk music encounters European classical music on piano, when Chinese singer meets the Prince of Sweden, when erhu, and pipa from China encounter Rock and Roll... what happens? What are the consequences? What kinds of reactions will there be?
The answer is a delight for the ear, a visual feast, a harmonious sound and a perfect collision of styles.
Gerhard Heiberg Chairman of the International Olympic Committee Marketing Commission invitated Tan Jing to come from Beijing to London to perform at the Royal Albert hall. That night, Oprah Ji Xiaojun of CCTV presided over the concert as an audience over 6,000 watched a refreshing mix of performance forms. Superb artists of different styles of interpretation, made for a strong response from the audience. Many hailing Tan Jing as an "Oriental Sarah Brightman."
Tan Jing sang "Sky", "Qiao Jia Da Yuan", "Silk Road", "Dongshan in that top", "Feathered legs of big red cockerel" and others in both Chinese traditional folk song styles and a fusion of Chinese folk music and Western rock.
Tan Jing shared the stage with artists from Europe: Swedish prince and pianist Robert Wells Intervet, British tenor Wynne Evans and Glenn Hughes as well as the British Blake vocal quartet, Swedish women's vocal group and so on. After the performance, repeated curtain calls for Tan Jing came from an audience refusing to allow her to leave.
Tan Jing said that “Music is an art without borders” and she hopes this concert will bring Beijing's blessing to London, spreading Chinese music culture throughout the world. She said that although they cannot understand the lyrics, music from China is still warmly welcomed by the West. "I want to do my part to take Chinese culture abroad, to let the world understand China." Tan Jing said.
British magazine "TimeOut" commented: "Perfect integration, and cooperation between Intervet Swedish pianist Robert Wells' rock, blues and other styles with Chinese singer Tan Jing."
In addition, Tan Jing has been invited to again share the stage with the British Blake male vocal performers in Beijing next year. She hopes to have more opportunities to participate in international cultural exchange activities.
According to Tan Jing, she and Robert Prince of Sweden met on August 20th 2008 at the Beijing Olympic Sports Center for joint performance, after the World Expo in Shanghai. Beijing TV "Global Spring Festival" saw the two in co-operation.
Robert Intervet Wales is known as one of the world's greatest pianists, one of his achievements is that he is able to blend classical world pop, rock and jazz.
Tan Jing's London audience praised the elegant style of performance atmosphere, beautiful sounding voice and wide range of styles. The depth of Chinese characteristics, music and exquisite costumes also amazed the audience.
Tan Jing said the concert in London, was equivalent to a trip to the Olympics. And would bring Beijing's blessing to the next Olympic host city – London; while allowing a European audience to feel the charm of Chinese musical culture.
In addition to concerts, whilst in London Tan Jing also saw fashion shoots for "Bazaar" and "fashion" magazines. Tan Jing believes that music and fashion are closely linked, whether it is classical music or modern music, these with fashion are timeless arts. She hopes to bring out the charm of music and fashion interacting together. She said: "This will be our main concert in the Royal Albert Hall. The river Thames, Big Ben and other world-famous landscapes are backdrops to the shoot, hoping to integrate fashion culture and history." London is now in winter but the major brands shooting Tan Jing need her wearing spring and summer fashions. Although very cold, with a smile Tan Jing declared herself very happy.
