Britains Mongrel Race: One Proverb Too Many.
As the arguments intensify over the coming election campaign, watch out for politicians 'playing the race card'. John Townend's recent comments on our impending 'mongrel race' are just one example of how politics breeds broad insults and cheap slogans instead of real debate and education. People are still telling the British Chinese that this is not their home.

'Racism has reared its ugly head. Imagine my shock when it made a lunge for me and it was wearing my face!' Our anonymous contributor gets introspective about racism

Southern Africa

"All you whites are the same, simply different to us. " So said a colleague I was working with. Well, this is strange as I am Chinese not white. I do have an English accent (broadly North Eastern) having lived in the UK for well over 15 years but I also regard myself as Chinese. Making this obvious point only brought a shrug and said, "You are white. I am black. You are not like any of the Chinese I know". I felt insulted - how could he simply brush my ethnicity away so lightly.

The Chinese and Racism

09 August 2000
A lot of Chinese living in western countries have been the target of racism, e.g. Australia, and Europe and elsewhere. But racism against Chinese people occurs in Asian countries too. In Malaysia and Indonesia where the Chinese have done well, racism against Chinese people is terrible. Although the Chinese have been the target of racism, some of them are not above being racist themselves. Read about Jackson Tan's experiences in Malaysia.

On the Outside Looking In

I've been reading the various articles and postings on the dimsum site after a chance introduction a couple of weeks ago. I find the articles fascinating and insightful but I'm still left wondering 'where do I fit in?'

Outrage at Immigration On The Back Of A Lorry

Steve Palmer

A regular visitor to the dimsum site, I find the articles interesting and thought provoking. Almost invariably they are informative. Occasionally, perhaps in ones passion to have ones say, writers will write less well balanced pieces. Jack Tan certainly did that in his piece "Immigration On The Back Of A Lorry" where he put the blame squarely on the shoulders of English xenophobia.

Comments on Outrage at "Immigration On the Back of a Lorry"

First off, I'm an Englishwoman. I was born here, as was my mother. My father came here in the 1930s. I happen to be half Chinese and I look totally Chinese. But I'm still an Englishwoman. Describing oneself as "an Englishman" tells me little about you except your geographical location.

Campaign Against Police Racism
Dimsum recently attended a meeting organised by the Monitoring Group. There we learned of the extent of police racism towards the Chinese community throughout the UK. Four cases were highlighted to us in particular. Jack and Diana summarise the literature handed out to us and what we heard.
