London Film Academy (LFA) and Varifair Film Festival join forces to present an afternoon of events aimed to educate and inspire the next generation of filmmakers and encourage academic communication between the UK and China, with the contribution of China’s leading filmmakers.

LFA, a film school that provides high-standard practical training in all the key areas of filmmaking with tutors who are working industry professionals, hosts two film-education events as part of the inaugural Varifair Film Festival, a celebration of Chinese films and the largest Chinese film festival in London:
New Talent 12.00-14.00
A screening of students’ short films, from LFA, Beijing Film Academy (BFA) and Communication University of China (CUC).
New Chinese Cinema – Chinese Film Directors Forum 15.00-16.30
A panel discussion with acclaimed filmmakers from China, explaining their approaches to filmmaking in the digital age, considering new trends in Chinese cinema and sharing their on-set experiences.
The panel, which is chaired by Sight & Sound film critic Michael Brooke, features the following Chinese talent:
Gu Changwei – Oscar-nominated cinematographer, whose credits include ‘Red Sorghum’ (1987); and Silver Bear-winning director, whose credits include ‘Peacock’ (2005).
Zhang Xiamin – professor at BFA; actor, whose credits include ‘Summer Palace’ (2006); author; producer, whose credits include ‘Fujian Blue’ (2007); documentary filmmaker; and organiser of the Festival of Independent Movies in China.
Pan Hua – professor at CUC; and film critic.
Hou Yong – Golden Rooster-winning cinematographer, whose credits include ‘The Blue Kite’ (1993).
Huo Jianqi – director, whose credits include ‘A Time to Love’ (2005); and art designer, whose credits include ‘The Horse Thief’ (1986).
Cai Shangjun – writer, whose credits include ‘Shower’ (1999); and director, whose credits include ‘The Read Awn’ (2007)
Zhang Jingchu - actor, whose credits include ‘Rush Hour 3’ (2007)
Tao Hong – actor, whose credits include ‘The Red Violin’ (1998)
Jiang Wenli – actor, whose credits include ‘Farewell My Concubine’ (1993)
These events offer a rare opportunity to meet emergent filmmakers, hear from key members of the Fifth, Sixth and New Generation and discover in depth the latest developments in Chinese cinema, with a focus on the country’s emergence as an economic power and the issues surrounding filming in contemporary China. There will be the chance to network throughout the afternoon.
