David Yip recently wrote and directed a short film entitled Chinese Whispers that documented several testimonies of the history of Liverpools Chinatown. Davids project emphasised the importance of rewriting a history that had lain forgotten and neglected by both the City of Liverpool and the Chinese community itself. Through Chinese Whispers, the film and the exhibition, a connection has been made to reunite previously unconnected fragments and establish an archive, specifically collated to recognise the history of the Chinese community in Liverpool. Using original source material from the personal archives of Chinese families and the extensive photographic collections that are located at Hulton Getty, David created a biographical sketch of the history of this Liverpool community. To support this exciting and fascinating project and to celebrate the relationship between the moving and still image Open Eye will be exhibiting a selection of photographs which were used in and supplementary to the making of this film. Additional materials will contextualise the social comments made by the photographers which includes: Bert Hardy and Martin Parr. It is hoped that the photographs of Hardy and Parr will encourage more families to contribute images and testimonies to the photographs already supplied by local documentarians.
