Forum members may be aware that Google, whose motto is "Don't be evil" and which has been so critical of China's internet policies, has itself always been nefariously tracking and storing data about what everyone is doing on-line, for its own and government agency purposes.

The Guardian reports that Google is changing its privacy policy on 1 March 2012 to step up its activities to gather, store and use personal information about its users.

People who are concerned about their own privacy may wish to consider some of the following actions.

(1) Delete any existing Google browsing history, as described in the Daily Mail, although these steps have only a limited effect.

(2) Preferably avoid using a Google account like gmail. Delete any existing and do not open a new Google account.

(3) Avoid using the Google search to look for information on the internet. Use an alternative such as ixquick.

(4) Avoid using the Google Chrome browser to access the internet. Use an alternative browser such as Mozilla Firefox, and consider installing the Adblock plugin to block Google.

(5) Investigate more technical steps, such as by editing the hosts file on the computer to block access to Google and related companies.

The EU are stating at the very last minute that Google's new privacy policy breaches EU data laws, but Google are going ahead anyway.

PC World provides this Privacy Checklist for Google users.
