Chinese iPad Workers NOT Allowed To Commit Suicide
The rightwing and often racist Daily Mail Newspaper has broken this story. The editorial policy seems to be that other ethnicities and cultures must be portrayed as 'different' and 'oddly quaint', but never of 'equal' worth. The story itself maybe true, or partly true for reasons peculiar to China.
Fortean Times for instance, often include many stories from China or Asia in general in their 'snippets' section that leave me feeling uneasy about the magazine. The 'other' is depicted as pure 'Orientalia', and has something of the Victorian voyeur about it. |

This is actually old news and completely true. One of my colleagues knows the factory quite well.
However, you really should stop reading the Daily Wail and repeating its stories. It does nobody any good. You are only increasing the level of paranoia and isolation in Chinese people. |

I quote a reader's comments of that article:-
"This is a Foxconn issue not a general Chinese issue. As an Expat working and living in China (the only foreigner in the factory) the workers here are well treated as rre many I have seen throughout my travells in China. On my way into work each day I see many Chinese hopefuls queuing outside factories looking work. The only queues I saw in the UK was outside dole office. At least the people here are NOT afraid of hard work!!!! The problem here is that the DM has picked up on only one company here which accounts for only 500,000 of a 1.3 billion population. As - Claire, Shenzhen, China, 2/5/2011 3: come here first, before judging the whole of China. Yes China has its problems and the working conditions are not what you would find in the west, and, greed comes into it, but what country doesn’t have this problem. DM how abvout a more balance report!!!!

The West measuring the East is just like asking the Dog and Cat to have a conversation. They might dine at the same table but have different expectations from their meal.
All papers, whether DM or the Daily Sport or the Daily Mirror lives on 'dearth of humanity' or 'the sensational news of the rich, powerful, famous and the infamous'. Do you expect anything positive from these newspaper reports? |
