Inclusion, Participation and the Emergence of British Chinese websites
http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/740/2/jems_5.pdf
This article dates to around 2006, but makes for interesting reading. It is written by Dave Parker and Miri Song, and is an academic research paper that mentions Dinsum.co.uk, as well as another British Chinese forum. This paper carries the following statement:
'i This paper is based on an ESRC grant (RES-000-22-1642) ‘British Chinese On-line Identities:
Participation and Inclusion’, which commences on September 2006.'
It is a very interesting examination of two BBC websites and the viewpoints and opinions held by some of the members regarding race, mixing between ethnic groups, the 7/7 bombers and perceptions of the 'other', particularly the Japanese. It is interesting to see on occassion, posts of an intolerant nature, expressed in what the poster presumed to be a generally supportive environment, analysed through the academic lens, in the cold light of day.
Parker and Song make the interesting point that by far the vast majority of posters remain ethnically Chinese - despite the boards expressing an official policing of 'open to all', and that the boards cater, more or less exclusively, to second generation Chinese people. Of course, there has been a lot of water under the bridge in these past five years, so much, infact, that some people are now saying that websites that coalesce around 'special interests' have been made redundant due to instant 'real time' communication. Have British born Chinese websites become a kind of generational 'tomb' for those who use them? |

That paper is a full 21 A4 sides long, and I read through it!
It is a pity that so few non-chinese visit these websites. These web sites are enabling British Chinese people to define their place in British society in their own terms for the first time.
However, they are failing to faciliate non-chinese to mix with chinese through the websites.
It is not surprising to me however.
"The British Chinese Community Website" beneath the Dimsum logo obviously suggests that it is a site for chinese. It doesn't matter what the written policy of the website says. Most non-chinese are bound to feel they do not belong here.
I suggest the site should say more on each page to suggest reasons why people would want to visit the site. e.g.:-
[1] Want to talk to british chinese;
[2] Want to talk about chinese related topics;
. . .
There are very good reasons for UK citizens to talk with and befriend chinese people as UK-China trade needs to increase very substantially.
Dimsum has an important role. |
